Office managers essentially ensure the smooth running of an office on a day-to-day basis and may manage a team of administrative or support staff, as well as supporting the CEO. Responsibilities typically include:

Office Manager Job Duties:

  • Reception duties, including answering incoming calls and scheduling appointments
  • Follows up on phone calls and contacts as appropriate
  • Answers general emails and postal correspondence with customers and suppliers
  • Books meeting rooms
  • Processes expenses and invoices
  • Creates budgets and orders office supplies
  • Files and archives accurate records

Development Chemist

Are you looking at working with sustainable and biodegradable options in your field of science to help the removal of plastic?

SGMA is actively looking for a highly motivated independently minded Chemist to support, create and drive our portfolio of Sol-Gel based materials/coating applications. This breakthrough product/barrier is totally aimed at the replacement of plastics and can have a multiple use. In our quest to develop this alternative to plastic we now need a passionate individual to continue the NPD in conjunction with our CEO.   

Dr Fanya Ismail, our CEO, has been recognised with several ‘innovative awards’ and has led the product development to date. We now can recruit and Development Chemist to support activities going forward as the business enters an exciting phase, working in many sectors and accumulating a varied portfolio of innovative products/solutions.

We are actively seeking a Development Chemist to be based in Sittingbourne, Kent at the Kent Science Park, own transport is essential. 


  • Liaising with suppliers as required
  • Preparing samples of products for customer review and approval
  • Assist in formulation and development of new products/coatings
  • Source, test and approve raw materials for new and existing products
  • Managing formulation projects from laboratory through customer trials to full-scale manufacture
  • Innovate and development of new products
  • Investigate customer problems, quality concerns and complaints
  • Perform testing on competitive samples
  • Prepare samples for customers
  • Troubleshooting any issues arising during the manufacturing process
  • Analysis of current/future markets for development
  • Competitor product analysis and existing product evaluation and formulation modification as required.


  • Degree qualified in Chemistry 
  • Experience developing products is essential
  • Good understanding of current regulations
  • Experience in formulation and development of coatings

As a Development Chemist you will be responsible for autonomously carrying out various R&D projects, formulating and characterising a variety of coatings to the required standards. You will also be responsible for the scale up formulation for pilot trials and production batches, and liaison with our production partners. All documentation, data and associated evidence would be produced to support the external testing authorities and commercial teams in the quest for transparency with new customers.

To be considered for this role, you will be degree educated in Chemistry and possess industrial experience and ideally within coatings. This may suite a PhD graduate.

Senior Chemist

Our company (SGMA) is looking for a Senior Chemist to join our team based in Sittingbourne in Kent. To commercialise our award-winning Paper Coating Technology along with our other key products in our technical platform. The world is facing considerable challenges posed by plastic pollution and climate change. In our oceans alone, it is estimated that there will more plastic than fish by 2050. The extent of the problem extends beyond just plastics in our oceans, with microplastics (tiny fragments of plastic found in water and air) now being found in the Arctic and other remote areas.

The global market urgently requires sustainable solutions to tackle these major challenges. SGMA delivers solutions that are extracted from sand, sustainable and provide alternatives to plastic and a route to create effective non fossil fuel-based chemicals by using non-toxic raw materials that are available globally.

Area of Responsibilities:

  • Review opportunities for process and product development/improvements with Founder.
  • Maintain raw material knowledge with Industry Standards.
  • Develop new, market leading products based on critical to quality (CQ) metrics.
  • Complete project assignments in a timely manner.
  • Proficiency with Manufacturing processes.
  • Train R&D Technicians and Jr. Chemists as assigned.
  • Perform such routine or non-routine tasks as necessary.
  • Maintain assigned products as a Product Steward.
  • Maintain work area in a professional manner.
  • Participate in safety inspections and maintain a safe work area.
  • Run R&D coatings projects, both short and long term, from concept through scale-up and commercialisation.
  • Deal directly with customers doing technical service-related work.
  • Support QC and manufacturing in scale-ups and with any chemistry problems they have.
  • Requirements:
  • Knowledge of statistical experimental design and data analysis techniques.

Excellent interpersonal skills. Candidate to be able to work as a team member and independently on multi-task assignments within a SME environment.  

Experience in the analysis and application of chemical, physical, and mechanical data to problem solving and product development.

Studies and experience in the areas of coatings, surface chemistry or composites is a plus.

Ability to partner with customers in product development programs.

Experience in directing the activities of laboratory technicians.

A passion and desire to support junior team members and create an ethos within the business that drives innovation as we create further products to support the removal of plastic. A in depth knowledge of new legislation on the removal of PFAS for UK, Europe and US would be an advantage.

Starting Salary of £40,000 p.a. depending on experience and qualifications
